  • WHAT'S IN YOUR BOXES

  • WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GRASS FED AND GRAIN FED BEEF?

In a nutshell it comes down to how we feed different animals and the eating experience you're looking for.

 

 

GRASS FED:

Our grass fed beef has been called "the best in Ontario" by people like Dave Meli, executive head butcher at The Healthy Butcher in Toronto. All our grass fed beef is aged 30 days and is clinically proven to have very healthy fat components similar to flax oil and cold water fish. In fact, Pure Island grass fed beef tops the list of linoleic acid analysis done on more than a dozen different beef sources by an independent University of Toronto professor. Click here for a detailed explanation of our unique grass feeding process, and the many benefits of grass fed beef.

 

TRADITIONAL GRAIN FED BEEF:

This is our premium grain-fed, all natural beef for people looking for a traditional beef experience.   We feed our grain only locally grown grains and forages and we never feed antibiotics or boost with hormones.  And after extended dry aging, it has exceptional tenderness and taste. In fact, it tastes so good some people don't even bother adding salt.

  • BUT ISN'T GRASS FED BEEF LEAN AND TOUGH?

We've heard that a lot of grass fed beef on the market isn't all that tender and tasty. Pure Island is different. We raise our grass fed cattle with enough fat to allow 30 days of dry aging and this makes all the difference. We're not aware of any other beef producer that does this. And lab analysis of the fat on our grass fed beef shows that it really does deliver the health benefits that grass fed beef is famous for.   • HOW DO I ORDER SIDES AND QUARTERS?

If you'd like a full, custom cut side or quarter of beef, ordering is easy! Just go to our online beef shop and scroll toward the bottom until you reach the section called "Pure Island Sides & Quarters". You'll have the chance to choose between traditional grain fed or grass fed beef, then you'll get to fill out a quick form telling us how you'd like you side or quarter cut and wrapped (or call us and we'll discuss it with you!).

  • WHAT IS DRY AGING?

Dry aging is the process of allowing beef to hang undisturbed in a refrigerated space at 1ºC to 2ºC for many weeks or before cutting it into steaks, roasts and other cuts. Why would anyone do this? Believe it or not, proper dry aging greatly enhances the taste and tenderness of beef. And we mean GREATLY. Some people like the taste of our aged beef so much they don't even put salt on it.   • WHEN IS YOUR NEXT DELIVERY? 

Deliveries to meeting points on Manitoulin Island, Espanola and Sudbury are typically once a month.  We can also arrange alternative deliveries based on our family's travel plans.

  • WHEN AND WHERE DO YOU DROP OFF BEEF ORDERS IN SUDBURY, ESPANOLA AND MANITOULIN?

Our local deliveries are typically on a Saturday.  Drop-offs  happen at the following times and places:

9:30 AM Little Current in the new Manitoulin Hotel parking lot

 

ESPANOLA

10:30 AM Espanola Mall Parking Lot (north end)

 

SUDBURY

12 noon  Countryside Arena parking lot (east side)

  • HOW DO I GET MY BEEF?

There are three ways to get Pure Island Beef:

  1. Pick up your beef at our drop-off locations in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island.
  2. Arrange a visit to us at the farm and pick up your beef in person. 
  3. Arrange a delivery at another time and place.  Call us to discuss!  705-282-4608

FARMING QUESTIONS . . . 

  • WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

Our family farm is located on western Manitoulin Island, Ontario. We raise all our own cattle right on our own farms.

  • CAN I PICK UP MY BEEF AT YOUR FARM?

Yes, we offer local pickups at our home farm #8, Hwy. 540A, Gore Bay ON, P0P 1H0. All we ask is that you call ahead at 705-282-4608 to set a pickup date and time.

PAYMENT QUESTIONS . . .

  • HOW DO I PAY FOR BEEF?

When you complete your order in our online store, you'll have the chance to choose from several payment methods.  Our preferred method is cash or etransfer on delivery.  If you are purchasing a side or quarter, we ask for a deposit by etransfer.  That can be arranged by emailing birgit@pureislandbeef.com.

  • WHAT IF MY SIDE OR QUARTER OF BEEF WEIGHS MORE (OR LESS) THAN THE LISTED WEIGHT IN THE ONLINE STORE? WHAT DO I PAY?

You only pay for what you actually get. Since every side or quarter of beef is a unique weight, we will arrange a deposit only to start with.    Every animal is different, so we can't give a price and weight in our online shop that'll be 100% accurate. The numbers listed in the shop are averages, based on the approximate weight of the vast majority of cattle.
